Castor Oil Packs
for Thyroid Support.
Small gland. Enormous impact.
The conversation is already happening. We are simply bringing it home to Pakistan.
When the thyroid
is off,
the whole body
feels it.
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. Despite its size, it governs an extraordinary range of functions — metabolism, energy production, body temperature, mood, sleep, weight, digestion, and hormonal balance. When it is functioning well, these systems run quietly in the background. When it is not, the disruption is felt everywhere.
Fatigue that does not resolve with rest. Unexplained weight changes. Brain fog. Hair thinning. Sensitivity to cold. A persistent sense that something is off — without a clear explanation for why.
Thyroid conditions are among the most common hormonal disorders globally — and among the most underdiagnosed. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and thyroid nodules each present differently, but all share one thing in common: the body is working harder than it should have to.
A well-supported thyroid begins with a well-supported liver.
The thyroid produces primarily T4 — an inactive hormone that must be converted to T3, the active form, before the body can use it. Approximately 60% of this conversion happens in the liver, with the remainder occurring in the gut, kidneys, and muscles. When liver function is significantly impaired, this conversion can be affected.
Thyroid support — a deeply personal
application of this ritual.

Castor oil recorded in one of the oldest known medical texts in the world — used externally for its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties.

Significantly documented by one of the most extensively referenced natural health practitioners of the century — who devoted considerable attention to castor oil packs on the liver and lymphatic system as a foundational supportive wellness practice.
Thyroid support is one of the most widely shared applications of castor oil packs in the global wellness community — with women and men sharing their experience of using both the neck and liver placements alongside their medical treatment and medication.

How castor oil packs work.
Used as a complementary practice and rooted in traditional use, castor oil packs may offer the following for those navigating thyroid conditions — alongside proper medical care and not as a replacement for it.
The neck contains a significant concentration of lymph nodes — among the highest density in the body. The lymphatic system is responsible for clearing waste, inflammatory compounds, and immune cells from the tissues — and when it is congested in the neck region, the thyroid gland sits in a less-than-ideal environment. Castor oil is traditionally associated with supporting lymphatic movement — and applied directly over the thyroid area, it may help support lymphatic drainage in this region.
The thyroid produces primarily T4 — an inactive hormone that must be converted to T3, the active form, before the body can use it. Approximately 60% of this conversion happens in the liver, with the remainder in the gut, kidneys, and muscles. Liver support is included alongside the thyroid placement on this page as a traditional complementary practice, and why many wellness practitioners recommend beginning with liver packs before introducing the neck placement.
Many thyroid conditions — particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis — have a significant inflammatory component. Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — has been widely noted for its natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Applied over the thyroid area, it may help reduce localised inflammation in the gland and surrounding tissues over time.
The thyroid does not exist in isolation. Supporting the liver, the lymphatic system, and the nervous system together creates the conditions in which the thyroid can function better.
The thyroid requires consistent blood flow and nutrient delivery to produce its hormones effectively. Castor oil packs applied over the neck are thought to support local circulation, bringing increased blood flow to the thyroid gland and surrounding tissues.
Chronic stress is one of the most significant disruptors of thyroid function. Elevated cortisol suppresses TSH — the signal that tells the thyroid to produce hormones — and impairs T4 to T3 conversion. The ritual of a castor oil pack — warmth, stillness, intentional rest — engages the parasympathetic nervous system, the state in which cortisol normalises and the body's regulatory systems can restore their natural rhythm.
The method.
A note before you begin
Many practitioners suggest beginning with liver castor oil packs — 3 to 4 times per week — before introducing the neck placement, as the liver is where T4 converts to T3. Beginning there first is thought to build the foundation for thyroid support. When ready to add the neck placement, begin with short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes and increase gradually.
Thyroid & lymphatic support
The thyroid sits at the front base of the neck — just below the Adam's apple. Cut a piece of flannel to a size that fits comfortably over the front of the neck. Fold it into a small rectangle, apply one to two tablespoons of castor oil to the flannel and place it over the front of the throat, covering the thyroid area. Do not wrap tightly — the flannel should rest gently against the skin. Use gentle warmth only, never direct or intense heat. Alternatively, use without heat. If you are experiencing a thyroid flare-up, active thyroiditis, or hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), do not use heat at all.
For T4 to T3 conversion — begin here first
Place your hand flat along the lower edge of your right ribcage — the area just beneath your hand, on the upper right side of your abdomen, is where your pack will sit. Begin with this placement for at least 4 weeks before introducing the neck placement.
You may keep the liver pack on overnight without heat. For the neck placement without heat — sessions of 30 to 45 minutes are suitable, but overnight neck placement is not recommended because of discomfort.
For best results, use the liver placement 3 to 4 times per week consistently. Introduce the neck placement gradually — beginning with shorter sessions — once you have established a consistent liver practice. Thyroid support is built through consistency over months, not a single session.
A few things to keep in mind.
Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
Castor oil packs are a traditional wellness practice and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or replace medical care for thyroid conditions or any related condition. If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, are taking thyroid medication, or are under any form of medical supervision, please consult your healthcare provider before incorporating castor oil packs into your routine.
