Period pain & you

Your body
is not supposed
to hurt
this much.

Period pain is common. But common does not mean normal — and it certainly does not mean you simply have to endure it. Cramping, lower back pain, bloating, heaviness, the kind of fatigue that arrives before your period and does not leave until it is over. These are signals from a body that is working hard and asking for support.

A well-supported cycle is foundational to overall hormonal wellbeing.

Castor oil packs — used consistently between periods, and not during periods — are one of the oldest and most accessible ways to provide that support. It is not a coincidence that this page connects directly to our pages on Liver Support, PCOS/PMOS, and Endometriosis. The thread runs through all of them.

The Traditional Connection

Period pain — one of the oldest and most documented applications of this ritual.

Castor oil recorded in one of the oldest known medical texts in the world — used externally for its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties.

Significantly documented by one of the most extensively referenced natural health practitioners of the century — who devoted considerable attention to castor oil packs on the lower abdomen as a supportive wellness practice for women's health.

Period pain is one of the most widely discussed applications of castor oil packs globally — with women sharing how consistent use between cycles has supported their experience of cramps, heaviness, and pelvic discomfort.

Why Castor Oil Packs & Period Pain

How castor oil packs work.

Used between cycles, not during periods and explored in modern research, castor oil packs over the lower abdomen may offer the following — as a gentle, complementary practice used alongside proper medical care.

Ricinoleic Acid & Pain Relief

Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — has been widely noted for its natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Period pain is largely driven by prostaglandins — inflammatory compounds that trigger uterine contractions. Applied consistently over the lower abdomen, ricinoleic acid may help reduce the inflammatory load that makes those contractions so painful.

Circulation & the Uterus

Ricinoleic acid supports circulation in the areas to which it is applied. When a castor oil pack is placed over the lower abdomen, warmth and gentle absorption are thought to bring increased blood flow to the uterus and surrounding reproductive tissues — nourishing them and helping clear the congestion that contributes to cramping and clotting.

Lymphatic Support

The lymphatic system plays a significant role in clearing inflammatory compounds and hormonal metabolites from the pelvic region. Castor oil is traditionally associated with supporting lymphatic movement — helping the body move what it needs to clear, more efficiently.

This is why castor oil packs work best when used between periods, not during periods — not as emergency relief during a painful day, but as a consistent practice that addresses the underlying inflammation before the next cycle begins.

Hormonal Balance

When the liver and lymphatic system are supported, oestrogen and progesterone are better balanced — which directly affects the severity of period pain. For this reason, some women use castor oil packs on both the liver and the lower abdomen as part of their cycle support practice. This is the connection that runs through our pages on Liver Support, PCOS/PMOS, and Endometriosis.

Rest & Nervous System Support

Chronic period pain is also a nervous system experience. The body braces for pain it has learned to expect. The ritual of a castor oil pack — warmth, stillness, intentional rest — engages the parasympathetic nervous system, the state in which the body heals and restores. Applied consistently over time, this signals safety to a nervous system that has been holding tension for years.

Castor Oil Pack — bottle, flannel and hot water bottle
How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack for Period Pain

The method.

What you will need
100% Cold Pressed Castor Oil
100% Undyed & Unbleached Cotton Flannel
A hot water bottle or electric heating pad
A comfortable, quiet place to lie down
Placement 1 — Lower abdomen

Primary

Place your hand flat just below the navel. Where your hand ends — the area from below to just above the pubic bone — is where your pack will sit. This is where the uterus and ovaries are located. Use between periods, not during periods — consistent use in the weeks between cycles is where the benefit builds.

Placement 2 — Lower back

Secondary — optional

If you experience lower back pain as part of your period pain, you may also apply the pack to the lower back — the area just above the tailbone. Many people alternate between the two placements or use both on different evenings. Use between periods, not during periods — consistent use in the weeks between cycles is where the benefit builds.

How to apply
01
Pour two to three tablespoons of cold pressed castor oil directly onto the lower abdomen — place your hand flat just below the navel. Where your hand ends, the area below to just above the pubic bone.
02
Massage gently for a minute or two. This is not a deep massage — just enough to let the oil settle into the skin before the flannel is placed.
03
Lay your undyed, unbleached cotton flannel over the oiled area. Fold any remaining flannel back over itself — this keeps the hot water bottle clean and helps contain the warmth.
04
Place your hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top of the flannel.
05
Lie down and rest for at least 30 minutes per session — many people extend to 45 or 60 minutes as the practice becomes part of their routine. This is when the body does its best work.

You may also keep the pack on overnight without heat — simply the flannel resting over the lower abdomen as you sleep.

If you are trying to conceive, check our Fertility page to know when to apply castor oil pack.

For best results, use at least three times per week — many people find four or five times fits naturally as the ritual becomes part of their evening. Period pain is not relieved in a single session — it is addressed through consistency over several cycles.

When to Use

A few things to keep in mind.

Between periods, not during periods — castor oil packs work best when used consistently between menstrual cycles, not during periods. Use throughout the follicular and luteal phases — this is when the underlying inflammation that causes pain is being set in motion.
On an empty stomach — apply at least two hours after a meal for best comfort.
For women — Do not use castor oil packs on abdomen and lower back during active menstruation, and pregnancy. If you are pregnant or nursing and wish to explore castor oil packs, please consult your healthcare provider first. If you are trying to conceive, check our Fertility page to know when to apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back. If you are undergoing IVF or IUI — do not use castor oil packs, particularly on lower abdomen and lower back.
Year-round — consistent use over several cycles is where the benefit builds. This is not a one-month practice.
A Note for First-Time Users

Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
