Pain relief & you

The ache
that stays.
The stiffness
that won't
let go.

Joint pain and muscle stiffness are two of the most persistent and limiting experiences the body can go through. Whether it is the swollen, inflamed joint that flares after overuse, the deep ache of arthritis that has settled in over years, the muscle that spasms and won't release, or the back that tightens and refuses to ease — the common thread is inflammation. Localised, persistent, and deeply uncomfortable.

What castor oil packs offer is direct — the pack is placed exactly over the affected joint or muscle, warmth is applied, and castor oil's primary active compound - ricinoleic acid is absorbed into the tissue beneath. This is targeted, localised support for a specific area that is inflamed and asking for attention.

Placed directly over the joint or muscle. Warmth held against it. The tissue begins to respond.

The Traditional Connection

Castor oil recorded in one of the oldest known medical texts in the world — used externally for its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties. The topical application of castor oil for joint and musculoskeletal pain is among its earliest and most consistently documented traditional uses.

Castor oil packs for joint and muscle pain have a wide and consistent following in the global wellness community — people managing arthritis, recovering from injury, dealing with chronic stiffness, and navigating the daily ache that settles into joints over time. The stories are honest and specific.

Why Castor Oil Packs for Joints and Muscle

How castor oil packs work.

Used directly over the affected joint or muscle and explored in modern research, castor oil packs may offer the following — as a gentle, complementary practice used alongside proper medical care.

Ricinoleic Acid & Inflammation

Muscle pain is inflammation — the body's response to effort, strain, or overuse. Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — has been widely noted for its natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Applied directly over the affected muscle, ricinoleic acid may help reduce the localised inflammatory response that drives soreness, tightness, and pain.

Warmth & Circulation

The gentle warmth of a castor oil pack over a sore muscle supports local circulation — bringing increased blood flow to the area, helping to clear the inflammatory compounds that accumulate after exertion, and delivering nutrients to the tissue that needs to repair. Warmth also directly helps tight, contracted muscle fibres begin to release and soften.

Lymphatic Support & Waste Clearance

Castor oil is traditionally associated with supporting lymphatic movement. Applied over a sore muscle, it may help the body clear what effort has left behind more efficiently — shortening the recovery window.

Rest & Nervous System Support

Lying still with warmth applied over an aching muscle engages the parasympathetic nervous system — the state in which the body repairs, restores, and reduces its inflammatory response. The ritual of a castor oil pack is not passive. It is an active act of recovery — one that creates the physiological conditions in which the muscle can begin to heal.

Arthritis & Chronic Joint Conditions

For arthritis and other chronic joint conditions, castor oil packs work through consistency rather than single sessions. Used regularly over weeks and months, they may help reduce the chronic inflammatory load in the joint, improve circulation to tissue that has become restricted, and gradually ease the stiffness and pain baseline. The research on ricinoleic acid and arthritis is specific and growing. Chronic conditions requires consistency — the pack is not a one-session fix.

How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack for Joint & Muscle

The method.

What you will need
100% Cold Pressed Castor Oil
100% Undyed & Unbleached Cotton Flannel
A hot water bottle or electric heating pad
Placement — Directly over the affected joint or muscle
Localised Muscle & Joint Support

Apply castor oil directly over the affected muscle or muscle group. For larger areas, additional flannel pieces are available.

How to apply
01
Apply two tablespoons of cold pressed castor oil directly onto the affected joint or muscle — the specific area of pain, stiffness, or inflammation.
02
Massage gently for a minute or two — just enough to let the oil settle into the skin before the flannel is placed.
03
Lay your undyed, unbleached cotton flannel over the oiled area. Fold any remaining flannel back over itself — this keeps the hot water bottle clean and helps contain the warmth.
04
Place your hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top of the flannel. The warmth should be comfortable — not intense.
05
Lie down and rest for 30 to 45 minutes. Many people find 60 minutes works well for deeper soreness or post-exercise recovery.

You may also keep the pack on overnight without heat — simply the flannel resting over the affected area as you sleep.

Using the pack on multiple areas? Additional flannel pieces are available.

For acute joint or muscle pain — use daily until the pain subsides. For arthritis and chronic conditions — use three to five times per week consistently over weeks and months. Chronic conditions require consistency. The pack is a practice, not a one-session fix.

When to Use

A few things to keep in mind.

After physical effort — use in the hours following exercise, sport, or physical work, when inflammation is building around the joint or muscle. The earlier the pack is applied, the more support it can offer during the recovery window.
During acute joint or muscle pain — use daily while pain is present. Consistent daily use during the acute phase is more effective than occasional sessions.
For arthritis and chronic joint conditions — use three to five times per week as a consistent ongoing practice. Chronic conditions respond to regularity over weeks and months. Consistency is where the benefit lives.
Morning stiffness — joint stiffness that is worst in the morning responds well to an evening pack the night before, or a short morning session over the stiff joint before the day begins.
On an empty stomach — apply at least two hours after a meal for best comfort.
Not on broken or irritated skin — do not apply castor oil to broken, cut, or irritated skin. Apply only to intact skin over the affected joint or muscle.
For women — do not use over the abdomen and lower back during active menstruation, pregnancy and if you are trying to conceive. During menstruation, for joint or muscle pain in other areas, use can continue as normal. During pregnancy and while nursing, you may use on other areas after you have consulted your healthcare provider first. Check fertility page for information on when you can apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back. If you are undergoing IVF or IUI — do not use castor oil packs, particularly on lower abdomen and lower back.
Not a replacement for medical care — if joint or muscle pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by significant swelling, restricted movement, numbness, or other concerning symptoms, please consult a healthcare provider. Castor oil packs are a complementary practice — they do not replace diagnosis or treatment.
A Note for First-Time Users

Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
