Pain relief & you

IBS does not
follow rules.
That is what
makes it
so difficult
to live with.

IBS — irritable bowel syndrome — is one of the most common and least understood gut conditions. The cramping that arrives without warning. The bloating that comes and goes. The constipation, the urgency, or both — sometimes alternating. The sensitivity to food, stress, and sleep that makes the gut feel impossible to manage. IBS is a chronic condition with no single cause and no single cure.

Castor oil packs offer targeted, localised support alongside medical care — placed over the abdomen, the warmth and oil work to reduce intestinal inflammation, ease cramping, support gut motility, and engage the parasympathetic nervous system — the state the gut needs to settle. Used consistently, many people with IBS find that the ritual provides meaningful relief from their most persistent symptoms.

A consistent, gentle practice — offering support alongside medical care, for the gut that needs to be met with calm, not urgency.

Castor oil packs for IBS have a growing and honest following in the global wellness community — people share how consistent abdominal use has helped ease cramping, reduce bloating, and bring a degree of predictability back to their gut.

Why Castor Oil Packs For IBS

How castor oil packs work.

Used over the abdomen and explored in modern research, castor oil packs may offer the following for IBS symptom support — as a gentle, complementary practice used alongside proper medical care. They support the gut in managing its symptoms.

Ricinoleic Acid & Intestinal Inflammation

One of the underlying features of IBS is low-grade inflammation in the gut lining — a persistent, low-level irritation that contributes to sensitivity, cramping, and irregular motility. Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — has been widely noted for its natural anti-inflammatory properties. Applied topically over the abdomen, it may help reduce this intestinal inflammation, easing the hypersensitivity that drives many IBS symptoms.

Warmth & Gut Relaxation

IBS cramping involves involuntary spasm in the intestinal muscle. The warmth of a castor oil pack over the abdomen works directly on this — relaxing the abdominal muscles and the gut beneath them. For many people with IBS, the warmth alone provides immediate relief from cramping and the tightness that accompanies a difficult gut day. It also supports blood flow to the digestive organs, helping them function with less friction.

Gut Motility & Regularity

IBS often involves disrupted gut motility — too fast in IBS-D, too slow in IBS-C, or both alternating in IBS-M. Ricinoleic acid is well-known for its effect on gut motility when taken orally. Applied topically over the abdomen, it may offer a gentler version of the same support — encouraging more regular, balanced movement over time. The effect is gradual, not immediate — it builds with consistent use.

Stress, the Gut-Brain Axis & IBS

IBS is deeply connected to the nervous system through the gut-brain axis — the communication pathway between the brain and the gut. Stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation are among the most significant triggers of IBS flares. The ritual of lying still with warmth over the abdomen directly engages the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" state.

Bloating & Constipation

For bloating — the pack addresses both the inflammation in the gut lining that contributes to gas and distension, and the physical tension in the abdominal wall that makes bloating worse. For constipation — the pack supports gut motility and relaxes the intestinal muscle, which may help the body move waste through more easily. Both respond well to consistent use, particularly in the evening when the digestive system is winding down and the body is preparing for the deep rest during which much of the gut's restoration happens.

How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack for IBS

The method.

What you will need
100% Cold Pressed Castor Oil
100% Undyed & Unbleached Cotton Flannel
A hot water bottle or electric heating pad
Placement — Over the abdomen
Placement 1 — Abdomen Primary

The primary placement is over the abdomen — from just below the ribcage down to just above the pubic bone. This is where the digestive organs sit. Place the pack over the full abdomen, extending across the full width of the abdomen, for general digestive support.

Placement 2 — Upper Right Abdomen Optional

The secondary placement is over the upper right abdomen — just below the right ribcage. This is where the liver and gallbladder sit. This placement supports bile flow, liver function, and fat digestion. Many people alternate between both placements across sessions.

How to apply
01
Pour two to three tablespoons of cold pressed castor oil directly onto the abdomen.
02
Massage gently in slow, circular motions for a minute or two. This helps the oil settle into the skin and supports gut movement.
03
Lay your undyed, unbleached cotton flannel over the abdomen, covering the oiled area fully. Fold any remaining flannel back over itself — this keeps the hot water bottle clean and helps contain the warmth.
04
Place your hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top of the flannel. The warmth should be comfortable and steady — not intense.
05
Lie down and rest for at least 45 minutes — 60 minutes is ideal for IBS.

You may also keep the pack on overnight without heat — the flannel resting over the abdomen as you sleep is particularly useful during IBS flares.

Using multiple placements? Additional flannel pieces are available.

IBS responds to regularity over time. Consistency is where the benefit lives.

When to Use

A few things to keep in mind.

At least two hours after eating — do not apply directly after a meal. Wait at least two hours.
Not on broken or irritated skin — do not apply castor oil to broken, cut, or irritated skin. Apply only to intact skin over the abdomen.
For women — Do not use on abdominal during active menstruation, during pregnancy and if you are trying to conceive (check fertility page for information on when you can apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back). If you are nursing, consult your healthcare provider first. Check fertility page for information on when you can apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back. If you are undergoing IVF or IUI — do not use castor oil packs, particularly on lower abdomen and lower back.
Alongside medical care — castor oil packs are a complementary practice and do not replace diagnosis, treatment, or any medication prescribed by your healthcare provider.
A Note for First-Time Users

Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
