Digestion & you

Good digestion
is not something
you notice.
Poor digestion
is something
you feel all day.

Bloating after meals. Constipation that makes the day uncomfortable. A sluggish gut that never quite empties. Cramping that arrives without warning. These are not small inconveniences — they affect energy, mood, sleep, and the ability to function normally. And they are remarkably common.

Castor oil packs for digestion are placed over the abdomen — directly over the area the gut occupies. The warmth and oil work together to support gut motility, reduce intestinal inflammation, stimulate the liver and gallbladder, and engage the parasympathetic nervous system — the state the body needs to be in for proper digestion to happen. This is not a laxative or a quick fix. It is a gentle, consistent practice that supports the gut from the outside in.

Placed over the abdomen. Warmth held against it. The gut begins to respond.

The Traditional Connection

applied over the abdomen for generations.

Why Castor Oil Packs & Pain Relief

How castor oil packs work.

Used over the abdomen and explored in modern research, castor oil packs may offer the following for digestive support — as a gentle, complementary practice used alongside proper nutrition and medical care.

Ricinoleic Acid & Gut Motility

Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — is well-known for its effect on gut motility when taken orally. Applied topically over the abdomen, it may offer a gentler version of the same support — encouraging the rhythmic contractions that move food and waste through the digestive tract. The effect builds with consistent use.

Warmth & Abdominal Relaxation

The warmth of a castor oil pack over the abdomen does something immediate — it relaxes the abdominal muscles and the gut beneath them. For bloating and cramping, this physical relaxation alone can bring noticeable relief. Warmth also supports blood flow to the digestive organs — the stomach, intestines, liver, and gallbladder — helping them function more effectively. A warm abdomen is a more functional abdomen.

Liver & Gallbladder Support

The liver and gallbladder sit in the upper right abdomen and play a central role in digestion — the liver produces bile, the gallbladder stores and releases it, and together they break down fats and process what the gut absorbs. When liver function is compromised, digestion can suffer. Castor oil packs over the upper right abdomen are traditionally used to support liver function and bile flow, which may improve overall digestive efficiency and reduce the heaviness that follows meals.

Rest & Digest — The Parasympathetic Connection

Digestion does not happen in a state of stress. The body digests in the parasympathetic state — what the nervous system calls "rest and digest." Lying still with warmth applied over the abdomen directly engages this state. For many people, this is the most important thing the castor oil pack does for their digestion — creating the physiological conditions in which the gut can actually do its job properly.

Bloating & Constipation

For bloating — the pack addresses both the inflammation in the gut lining that contributes to gas and distension, and the physical tension in the abdominal wall that makes bloating worse. For constipation — the pack supports gut motility and relaxes the intestinal muscle, which may help the body move waste through more easily. Both respond well to consistent use, particularly in the evening when the digestive system is winding down and the body is preparing for the deep rest during which much of the gut's restoration happens.

How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack for Digestion

The method.

What you will need
100% Cold Pressed Castor Oil
100% Undyed & Unbleached Cotton Flannel
A hot water bottle or electric heating pad
Placement — Over the abdomen
Placement 1 — Abdomen Primary

The primary placement is over the abdomen — from just below the ribcage down to just above the pubic bone. This is where the digestive organs sit. Place the pack over the full abdomen, extending across the full width of the abdomen, for general digestive support.

Placement 2 — Upper Right Abdomen Optional

The secondary placement is over the upper right abdomen — just below the right ribcage. This is where the liver and gallbladder sit. This placement supports bile flow, liver function, and fat digestion. Many people alternate between both placements across sessions.

How to apply
01
Pour two to three tablespoons of cold pressed castor oil directly onto the lower abdomen — from just below the navel downward.
02
Massage gently in slow, circular motions for a minute or two . This helps the oil settle into the skin and supports gut movement.
03
Lay your undyed, unbleached cotton flannel over the abdomen, covering the oiled area fully. Fold any remaining flannel back over itself — this keeps the hot water bottle clean and helps contain the warmth.
04
Place your hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top of the flannel. The warmth should be comfortable and steady — not intense.
05
Lie down and rest for at least 30 minutes — 45 to 60 minutes is ideal for digestive support.

You may also keep the pack on overnight without heat — the flannel resting over the abdomen as you sleep is a common and effective approach for constipation and sluggish digestion.

Using multiple placements? Additional flannel pieces are available.

For constipation — use daily until regularity returns. For bloating and general digestion — use three to five times per week as an ongoing evening practice. Digestive health responds to consistency over time, not a single session.

When to Use

A few things to keep in mind.

Evening — the most effective time for digestive support. The body is winding down, the gut is completing its day's work, and the parasympathetic nervous system is more receptive. An evening pack supports the restoration that happens during sleep.
At least two hours after eating — do not apply directly after a meal. Wait at least two hours so the initial digestion process is not disrupted.
For constipation — use daily until regularity returns, then three to five times per week as a maintenance practice. Many people find that consistent evening use prevents constipation from returning.
For bloating — use in the evening after a day of bloating, or proactively on days when bloating is expected. Consistent use over two to four weeks tends to produce a noticeable reduction in baseline bloating.
On an empty stomach — apply at least two hours after a meal.
Not on broken or irritated skin — do not apply castor oil to broken, cut, or irritated skin. Apply only to intact skin over the abdomen.
For women — do not use castor oil packs over the abdomen and lower back during active menstruation, throughout pregnancy and if you are trying to concieve. During pregnancy and while nursing, you may use on other areas after you have consulted your healthcare provider first. Check fertility page for information on when you can apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back. If you are undergoing IVF or IUI — do not use castor oil packs, particularly on lower abdomen and lower back.
A Note for First-Time Users

Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
