Pain relief & you

Arthritis
doesn't go away.
But the pain
can be
managed.

Arthritis is a chronic condition — one that does not resolve, but one that can be managed. The inflammation inside the joint that causes pain, the stiffness that is worst in the morning, the ache that settles in by evening, the loss of range that accumulates slowly over time. These are the daily realities of arthritis. And they are what castor oil packs address.

Castor oil packs do not treat arthritis. What castor oil packs offer is targeted, localised symptom relief — the pack is placed exactly over the affected joint, warmth is applied, and ricinoleic acid is absorbed into the tissue beneath. Used consistently, this may help reduce the daily inflammatory load, ease stiffness, and make the joint more comfortable to move.

Not a cure. A consistent, gentle practice — placed directly over the joint that hurts, used regularly alongside medical care.

The Traditional Connection

Arthritis support — used traditionally for joint inflammation
across generations.

Ebers Papyrus

Castor oil recorded in one of the oldest known medical texts in the world — used externally for its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties. The topical application of castor oil for joint inflammation and arthritis-like conditions is among its earliest and most consistently documented traditional uses.

Extensively referenced in the work of Edgar Cayce — one of the most widely known natural health practitioners of the 20th century — who documented castor oil packs for inflammation as part of a broader wellness practice.

Castor oil packs for arthritis have a wide and consistent following in the global wellness community — people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other joint conditions sharing how consistent use over the affected joint has helped reduce their daily pain and stiffness. The conversation is specific, honest, and growing.

Why Castor Oil Packs for Arthritis

How castor oil packs work.

Used directly over the arthritic joint and explored in modern research, castor oil packs may offer the following — as a gentle, complementary practice used alongside proper medical care. They do not replace treatment. They support symptom management.

Ricinoleic Acid & Inflammation

Muscle pain is inflammation — the body's response to effort, strain, or overuse. Castor oil's primary active compound — ricinoleic acid — has been widely noted for its natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Applied directly over the affected muscle, ricinoleic acid may help reduce the localised inflammatory response that drives soreness, tightness, and pain.

Warmth & Circulation

The gentle warmth of a castor oil pack over a sore muscle supports local circulation — bringing increased blood flow to the area, helping to clear the inflammatory compounds that accumulate after exertion, and delivering nutrients to the tissue that needs to repair. Warmth also directly helps tight, contracted muscle fibres begin to release and soften.

Lymphatic Support & Waste Clearance

Castor oil is traditionally associated with supporting lymphatic movement. Applied over a sore muscle, it may help the body clear what effort has left behind more efficiently — shortening the recovery window.

Rest & Nervous System Support

Lying still with warmth applied over an aching muscle engages the parasympathetic nervous system — the state in which the body repairs, restores, and reduces its inflammatory response. The ritual of a castor oil pack is not passive. It is an active act of recovery — one that creates the physiological conditions in which the muscle can begin to heal.

Consistency & Long-Term Relief

Arthritis is a chronic condition — and it responds to a chronic practice, not a single session. Used consistently three to five times per week over weeks and months, castor oil packs may help reduce the daily inflammatory load in the joint, gradually shift the pain baseline, and slow the accumulation of stiffness that arthritis brings over time. The benefit lives in the repetition. Consistent use may make it significantly more manageable.

How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack for Arthritis

The method.

What you will need
100% Cold Pressed Castor Oil
100% Undyed & Unbleached Cotton Flannel
A hot water bottle or electric heating pad
A comfortable, quiet place to lie down
Placement — Directly over the arthritic joint
Localised muscle & pain support — with heat

Knees — place the pack over the kneecap and surrounding area, covering the full joint.

Hips — place over the hip joint on the outer upper thigh and hip area.

Shoulders — place directly over the shoulder joint, covering the front and top of the shoulder.

Wrists & fingers — fold the flannel to size and wrap or lay it over the joint. For fingers, a smaller piece of flannel works best.

Ankles — place over the ankle joint, covering both sides if possible.

How to apply
01
Apply two tablespoons of cold pressed castor oil directly onto the arthritic joint — the specific area of pain, swelling, or stiffness.
02
Massage gently for a minute or two — just enough to let the oil settle into the skin before the flannel is placed.
03
Lay your undyed, unbleached cotton flannel over the oiled area. Fold any remaining flannel back over itself — this keeps the hot water bottle clean and helps contain the warmth.
04
Place your hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top of the flannel. The warmth should be comfortable — not intense.
05
Lie down and rest for 30 to 60 minutes. Many people with arthritis find that longer sessions of 45 to 60 minutes produce more noticeable relief — particularly for knees and hips.

You may also keep the pack on overnight without heat — simply the flannel resting over the affected area as you sleep.

Using the pack on multiple areas? Additional flannel pieces are available.

For arthritis — use three to five times per week as an ongoing practice. Arthritis is a chronic condition and responds to regularity over weeks and months, not a single session. Many people find that consistent use over four to six weeks produces a noticeable shift in their daily pain and stiffness levels. The pack is a practice, not a one-session fix.

When to Use

A few things to keep in mind.

Evening — the most effective time for arthritis. Apply in the evening so the joint has overnight to absorb the oil and respond to the warmth. Many people report that their morning stiffness is noticeably reduced with consistent evening use.
During flares — during an arthritis flare, use daily over the affected joint. Daily use during a flare is more effective than occasional sessions and may help shorten the duration and intensity of the flare.
Between flares — use three to five times per week even when the joint is not in an active flare. Consistent maintenance use may reduce the frequency and severity of flares over time.
Morning stiffness — if morning stiffness is a primary symptom, a short session of 20 to 30 minutes over the affected joint in the morning — before the day begins — can help ease the joint into movement.
On an empty stomach — apply at least two hours after a meal for best comfort.
Not on broken or irritated skin — do not apply castor oil to broken, cut, or irritated skin. Apply only to intact skin over the affected joint.
For women — do not use castor oil packs over the abdomen and lower back during active menstruation, throughout pregnancy and if you are trying to concieve. For arthritic joints in other areas, use can continue as normal. During pregnancy and while nursing, you may use on other areas after you have consulted your healthcare provider first. Check fertility page for information on when you can apply and pause use on abdomen and lower back. If you are undergoing IVF or IUI — do not use castor oil packs, particularly on lower abdomen and lower back.
Not a replacement for medical care — castor oil packs are a complementary symptom relief measure and do not treat, reverse, or replace medical care for arthritis. If you are experiencing a new or worsening joint condition, significant swelling, or restricted movement, please consult a qualified healthcare provider.
A Note for First-Time Users

Begin with shorter sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and observe how your body responds before extending to longer sessions. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before your first full use. Discontinue if any irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
